Write On, the Talk Show!

Hello friends!

The Holy Spirit has me busy at work on a new Internet talk show I'll host each week about writing and self-publishing tips at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/Write-On-Right-On

I hope you'll be able to tune into my live talk show online and even call-in to the show!

The free number to call-in is: (646) 200-3542

The show airs live on the following dates this month:

--Thursday, April 3: 11:30AM (Eastern Time)

If you can't listen live, no problemo as the show will be recorded and be made available for listeners at any time.

Given that I'll be hosting the weekly Write On talk show, (which is basically an audio blog), this written blog will no longer be written daily.

Instead, this blog will provide info and resources in support of the weekly talk show.

I'm excited about this blessing, to be able to spread the Good News, to the uttermost parts of the earth, via the Internet.

I hope you'll listen!

Have a blessed day by telling someone about Jesus!

Your Brother in Christ,

Steven Kendall

Write On, Right On!: New Talk Show

I haven't blogged in recent days as I've been busy preparing
an Internet talk show that I will host on BlogTalkRadio.com.

This is real short notice, but...
You are cordially invited to listen to my new Internet talk show,
called "Write On, Right On, Write On!" on
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/Write-On-Right-On

The program will be about writing and self-publishing tips.

This Saturday at 6pm ET, I will do a 15 min. practice run of my
show so that I can get a feel for the technology. I'm pretty tired
from composing, recording and uploading my theme music--wait
'til you hear it! A warning in advance...I will need piano lessons soon. : )

You can call-in during my show to speak to me live at:
(646) 200-3542.

Hope you can listen tonight!

If not, no problemo, the show will be recorded and
available online for free.

I hope to do a weekly
show soon, so you'll have an opportunity to hear
me run my mouth in the near future. : )

If you'd like to be a guest on a future show, please
contact me.

God bless,

Steve Kendall

Got Writer's Block? Start a Blog!

Two weeks ago, I mentioned that I would provide a link to a resource for authors who wish to submit manuscripts to Christian publishers. Sorry for the delay, here's that link:
http://www.christianmanuscriptsubmissions.com

And now for this week's tip: Getting over writer's block with blogging...

Many aspiring writers have difficulty getting started. Perhaps you're reluctant to write something for fear of what others will think. I often struggle with concerns over grammar, or sentence structure, both of which are weaknesses that I have. I just move forward and try to edit later, and not worry about what folks think (If you've read my blogs, you can tell I write quickly, without much editing!)

Perhaps you're a writer experiencing a dry period, or writer's block, where you just can't seem to write anything--blogging may be the cure for what ails you!

When you can't seem to write anything, for whatever reason, start a blog, where you can write daily about subjects that come to you fluidly, such as diary passages about what happened during your day, a hobby, dreams, or any topic that you have a passion for.

What is a blog exactly? Blog is a funny word, but it is short "Web log." Blogging basically involves writing short, diary-type entries on any topic, that one shares with the entire world. If you allow ads on your blog, you can earn money as well. Google has a great service that I use, called Blogger.com, which permits one to create a free blog and restrict ads to specific topics, such as Christianity.

Last year, the U.S. morning news program, Good Morning America, did a really good story on how one can use a blog to spread a message and earn money.

I personally encourage Christians to use the Internet to spread the Gospel through blogging.

I currently have three blogs, the one you're currently reading, as well as my daily blog about Bible Study and Christian resources called BibleStudyCafe.com and Helmet of Salvation, a blog where I offer my opinions on topics of interest to Christians. By using these blogs, I have an opportunity to write, almost every day and therefore keep my writing muscles (my mind) in shape, just as daily exercise keeps the body in shape.

Sometimes I "re-purpose" or take one blog topic and use it with my other blogs. For example, the entry you're currently reading, was originally written for my BibleStudyCafe.com blog, but I re-purposed and slightly changed the focus to fit this specific blog on writing tips. In other words, whenever possible, I try to use something I've written in different ways. Basically, the idea is to write once, and use the material multiple times and in different ways.

As a Christian writer, I think of blogging in this fashion:
In Acts 1:8, Jesus told his disciples and us, that when we accept Jesus, the Holy Spirit will help us to witness to others: "... you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." The Internet makes it possible to witness for Christ to the uttermost parts of the earth.

Have a blessed day, by spreading the Good News about Jesus!

Resurrection Sunday, Not Easter

A few years ago, the pastor of my church, Dr. Lucius M. Dalton, Senior Pastor of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, began to stress the phrase Resurrection Sunday, instead Easter Sunday, which I agree is a good idea, given the pagan origins of Easter.

The Web site, AllAboutJesusChrist.org does a good job of discussing the resurrection of Christ.

There are a number of great online sermons about the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Here are several that I recommend (look for the week of March 17, 2008):

Enduring Truth with Pastor Paul Sheppard

In Touch with Dr. Charles Stanley

Living on the Edge with Chip Ingram

Have a blessed weekend by learning more about Christ and His resurrection.

Maundy Thursday (Maundy.com)/ Book: The Last Week

Hello everyone,

I thought I'd take the week off from blogging, but given that this is Holy Week-- as observed by Christians who observe the week leading up to the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ--I was compelled to use this week as a teachable moment and a witnessing opportunity. Churchyear.net has a nice breakdown of this week day by day.

I'm reading an interesting book called The Last Week: A Day-by-Day Account of Jesus's Final Week in Jerusalem by Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan.

Today, I want to discuss Maundy Thursday. Never heard of Maundy Thursday before, or don't quite remember what it is? Check out http://www.maundy.com as the site does a good job of providing both the definition and historical background of Maundy Thursday.

Be blessed by telling someone about Maundy Thursday!

Resources from Today's Interview

First, I want to thank radio host, Marsha Sumner for having me back on her
show again. She has truly blessed me with the opportunity to share my
ministry. (Please see my previous blog entry if you don't know about the interview.)

I also want to thank the two wonderful authors that were on the program with me today--I met Ms. Kristi Luv Wilson and Ms. Wanda L. Childs for the first time today and they both inspired me with their personal testimonies and work as authors.

Another thanks to all of my family and friends who prayed for me, listened to the show and/or encouraged me along the way.

Thanks to fellow Christian author, Sherryle Jackson, who called into the show today. I met Sherryle over the weekend at a book fair at Andrews Air Force Base, and she was delightful.

Sherryle was recently interviewed on Heaven1580AM about her book, Soon and Very Soon, which I bought a copy of this weekend and my wife is currently enjoying.

And now, a list of resources mentioned on today's show, and a few that were not...

1. Recommended book about writing and contacting publishers:
How I Write: Secrets of a Bestselling Author, by Janet Evanovich

2. The Web sites of author's on today's show:
--Ms. Kristi Luv Wilson - www.drivingdestiny.com

--Ms. Wanda L. Childs - www.pushedintomypurpose.com
and www.blessed247.com
Ms. Childs encouraged listeners to sign up for her mailing list by
sending an email to info@blessed247.com as she will be offering a
seminar on self-publishing.

--Me, Steven D. Kendall - www.BibleStudyCafe.com

3. Volunteer Writer's Group:
http://www.washingtonbooks.org
This resource was from a caller near the end of the radio program, one of my wife's colleagues, who was so nice to provide this site, which I'll be sure to visit soon.

Here are a few more resources that I didn't have time to mention on today's show:

--Self-Publishing, Print-on-Demand (Lulu.com): The print-on-demand company that I use to self-publish all of my books is www.Lulu.com.

You can self-publish everything from family cookbooks to calendars at Lulu.com. I want to emphasize that self-publishing doesn't always have to mean you're going to publish a book, you may have a personal project that you'd like to publish perhaps a few copies of someday.

WashingtonPost.com used Lulu.com to publish "Jezebel's Tomb," a book by their Business reporter, David Hilzenrath.

Here's more info about how Jezebel Tomb was published:
- Post Web Site Is Publishing Reporter's Novel as a Serial
, By Frank Ahrens Wednesday, January 17, 2007,
-
Transcript-Jezebel's Tomb, David Hilzenrath Novelist and Washington Post Reporter, Friday, January 26, 2007

--A few more articles from the Washington Post about Lulu and Print on Demand:
- Sites Let Amateurs Be Published Authors Without the Book Deal, By Leslie Walker, Thursday, May 4, 2006
- Transcript-Book World Live: Self-Publishing, Paula Span, Contributing Writer, Tuesday, January 25, 2005

--You are welcome to send me questions about the writing process or self-publishing and I will answer them, at least once a week, on this blog.

Until next week, be blessed by reading your Bible!

Your Brother in Christ,

Steven Kendall

Questions and Answers from the Heaven1580am Interview

Hello everybody!

Today I was one of the guests on Marsha Sumner's show, Crosstalk Urban Style on Heaven 1580 AM radio, along with fellow authors, Ms. Kristi Luv Wilson and Ms. Wanda L. Childs.

I will be posting resources I discussed on today's show on this blog today!

At present, I'm currently posting new info, so if you've read the tips below, be sure
to check back in about an hour as I should be finished with this week's article.

Types of Self-Publishing:
Given that I self-publish all of my books, I’m often asked about self-publishing by aspiring authors and authors who have used other means to publish their work.

Here are a few tips I have to offer on this subject (this is just my advice, and if you follow it, it is not guaranteed to work for you.)…

1. Pray: Pray before you venture into publishing your work. I also pray everyday before beginning a writing session.

2. Learn about various forms of Publishing: Become familiar with the various types of publishing, such as traditional, vanity, subsidy and self-publishing, and decide what’s best for you.

A resource I used to learn the definitions of different types of publishing is located on the Web site of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America: http://www.sfwa.org/beware/vanitypublishers.html

Their site does a good job of defining self-publishing and other forms of publishing, along with the pros and cons of each.

In my next blog entry, I'll provide a list of Web addresses for some of the resources mentioned and not mentioned during the discussion today on Crosstalk Urban Style.

Be sure to check back in about an hour!
